M’LANG
HISTORY
The name M’lang was derived from a Maguindanaoan word “TAMLANG” which means BAMBOO. It lies strategically in the Southern portion of the Province of Cotabato in Central Mindanao. It is the second most populated municipality in the Province of Cotabato – third with the inclusion of the City of Kidapawan.
Although it is geographically distant from the commercial and urban centers, M’lang still plays an important role in supplying the Province and other parts of the region with rice, sugarcane, rubber and bamboo. The Municipality is also a melting pot of Ilonggo, Ilocano, Cebuano and Muslim tribes and culture; thus, various cultures and traditions had been preserved and promoted in the area. The commercial growth of the town, which is rapidly visible, can maximize its potential especially when the area capitalizes on the prevailing trade and commerce. The Municipality will play a vital role in the economy of the province due to the declaration of the Provincial Government of the “Provincial Agro-Industrial Park” and the establishment by the Air Transportation Office of a Rural Airport.
The Municipality of M’lang is predominantly an agricultural community, though not all areas are fully developed. It is situated on wide plains and valleys. It has ring pattern of development wherewith the different barangays surrounding the urban area ten to effect self-progress with a pattern of the grid, but generally dependent on the rural area with regards to its commerce and trade activities.
The racial pattern of development is proposed for the areas whereby all barangays so as to effect local development and evolve expansion in the peripheral nodes.
The present trend of development in the urban area falls under the semi-grid category. Blocks or columns along parallel road networks define the physical layouts of the sectors. Under the proposed radial development, the Municipal Government Center where the Municipal Hall is located will be maximized. All line agencies within the town will be identified within the Government Center to facilitate coordination and thereby save time and cost in terms of follow-up transactions. The market area will have its expansion to accommodate prospective investors in the commercial sector. Existing land uses that are not adverse or those that will not jeopardize the peaceful living of those in adjacent land uses will be maintained.
In line with this, agro-cultural entities such as rice mills, factories and other light industries that emit any type of pollution will be located at the southern portion of the municipality extending towards barangays Dugong, Sangat, Tawantawan and Langkong.
