Taliño-Mendoza Talks about Equality on Mindanao Week of Peace

At the start of the celebration of the Mindanao Week of Peace 2011 at the University of Southern Mindanao Gymnasium last November 22, 2011, Honorable Governor Emmylou “Lala” J. Taliño-Mendoza talked about equality among the people of Mindanao and encouraged the many students who attended the program to dream big.

In her welcome message, she stated that, “Peace has a price. Naniniwala akong walang rebelde dahil pobre o mahirap.  May nagrerebelde dahil may injustice.” (Peace has a price. I believe that people rebel not because they are poor but because there is injustice).

For this reason, she stressed that government programs and projects must be accessible to everyone.  According to her, everybody should be treated equally, regardless of tribal affiliation.

There should be no prejudice either, when it comes to education. Students who are given honors should be those who are worthy of the award and not because they are “malakas” and “maykapit” .

Governor Taliño-Mendoza also reminded the many students who were there to be responsible, to do their best and to study hard.  She stressed that education coupled with discipline is a tool that will help them prepare for their future. She added that from the youth of today shall emerge the future leaders of the country.

“Dream big. You can be the next governor,”

Aimed at promoting peace in Mindanao, the event was attended by members of government organizations, civil societies, public officials, and students from the towns of Kabacan, Kidapawan City, Pikit, Matalam, and Mlang. LAF
